Glossary of Terms (as used in the lessons)

Nahuatl A group of Mexican and Central American Indian tribes, including the Aztecs.
nanny A female goat.
native grasses Grass plants which occur naturally in an area and do not have to be planted.
natural fibers Fibers obtained from plants and animals.
natural resource Something that occurs in nature and is valuable to humans.
nectar A sweet liquid secreted by flowers of various plants and gathered by bees for making honey.
negative An image in which the light areas of an object appear dark, and the dark areas appear light.
Nembutal A type of sedative drug administered to livestock.
niacin A vitamin B complex occurring in living cells as an essential substance for growth.
nitrogen Gas that occurs naturally in the air and soil, where it is converted into usable forms for plant use by bacteria and other natural processes.
non-renewable Inability to regrow or replenish; limited quantity.
notching Cutting a V-shape in the ear of a swine to indicate its litter or number in litter.
no-till farming Method of farming in which plowing is avoided by applying chemicals to eliminate weeds.
numerator The expression written above the line in a common fraction.
nurse To take nourishment from the breast; suckle.
nutrient cycle The process by which nutrients move form one stage of the life cycle to the next.
nutrients Substances necessary for life and growth.
nutrition The science or study that deals with food and nourishment, especially in humans.
nylon Strong, tough, elastic synthetic material used to produce fibers, filaments, bristles or sheets.
