Glossary of Terms (as used in the lessons)

G is for . . .

gander A male goose.
gelatin A colorless or slightly yellow, transparent, brittle protein formed by boiling the specially prepared skin, bones, and connective tissue of animals and used in foods, drugs, and photographic film.
gelding A castrated male horse.
gene The simplest unit of inheritance.
geneology A record of table of the descent of a family, group or person from ancestor of ancestors.
gene bank A place where seeds are preserved under dry, cool conditions and where other plant materials are kept in test tubes or in fields.
gene pool The genetic base available to plant and animal breeders for stock improvement.
general store A store that carries a variety of goods.
genetics The branch of biology that deals with heredity, especially the variation of inherited characteristics among similar or related organisms.
genetic erosion The gradual change in a plant or animal species because of rearrangement of the genes due to the environment or unknown causes.
genetic identity All the characteristics of a particular breed that make it different from other breeds.
genotype The genetic makeup, expressed and latent, of an organism.
geotropism The response of a living organism to gravity, as the downward growth of plant roots.
germ The embryo of a seed.
germinate To begin to grow; sprout.
gestation The time period beginning when a female animal is bred and ending with the birth of her offspring.
gestation table A table used by producers showing the approximate date an animal will give birth, based on the conception date.
gilt A young female swine that has not had a litter.
gobbler A male turkey.
goods Articles of trade or commerce, especially agricultural products that can be transported.
goose down Fine, soft, fluffy feathers on young birds and under the outer feathers on adult birds.
gosling The young of the goose family.
grain A small hard seed or fruit produced by a cereal grass.
grain drill A machine or implement for planting seeds in holes or furrows.
grass A kind of plant with narrow leaves, hollow stems and spikes of flowers which sheep, goats, horses and cattle can eat.
grassland An area where mostly grass grows, such as a prairie or meadow.
grazing The act of putting livestock out to feed on growing grasses or herbage
greedy Wanting to eat or drink more than one can reasonably consume.
greenhouse A glass- or plastic-covered structure used for the growing of plants.
greenhouse effect The warming of the Earth's atmosphere, which scientists think is caused by excessive amounts of carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere.
grid A pattern of regularly spaced horizontal and vertical lines forming squares on a chart.
grinding stone A saddle-shaped stone used with a hand-held stone to crush grain and seeds.
ground beef Beef that has been ground.
groundwater Water that soaks into the soil and flows underground.
grow To increase in size by natural process.
growing zones Climatic division based on the length of the growing season in a given area.
gullies Deep cuts in the land where topsoil has been washed or blown away.
gumbo A soup or stew thickened with okra.
