Glossary of Terms (as used in the lessons)

A is for . . .

abdomen
The large rear part of the body of an arthropod.
abomasum

The part of the stomach in ruminant animals where true digestion takes place.

acre

A unit of area in the U.S. Customary System, used in land measurement equal to 4,840 square yards, or 43,560 square feet - about the size of a football field.
adaptability
The ability of a species to survive in a variety of environmental conditions.
aerate
To supply with air or expose to the circulation of air.
ag
A short term used in place of the word agriculture.
agribusiness
The production, processing and distribution of farm products and the manufacture of farm machinery, equipment and supplies.
agriculture
The science, art, and business of cultivating soil, producing crops, and raising livestock; farming.
Agricultural Experiment Station
Facilities established by the Hatch Act of 1887 stations are to be maintained by land grant colleges in which agricultural research is conducted in various locations around the state to study and solve agriculture-related problems first hand.
agricultural mechanics
The segment of the agriculture industry dealing with the selection, construction, operation, maintenance and repair or use of agricultural power, agricultural machinery and equipment, structures and utilities, and soil and water management practices.
akootasquash
The Massachusett word for squash.
Algonquian

A family of North American Indian languages spoken in an area from Labrador to the Carolinas between the Atlantic coast and the Rocky Mountains.

albumen
Proteins consisting primarily of amino acids found in milk, blood, egg whites, muscle and vegetables.
alfalfa
A plant native to Europe, cultivated for grazing or for feeding to livestock as hay.
allotment
Something that is assigned as a share or portion.
almanac
An annual publication including calendars with weather forecasts, astronomical information, tide tables, and other related tabular information.
alpaca
A domesticated South American mammal related to the llama and having fine, long wool.
alternative
Something different from the usual.
amino acid
An essential component of the protein molecule.
ancestral
Something derived or gained from those from whom one is descended, especially if more remote than a grandparent; a forebear.
ancestry
Ancestral descent or lineage.
anesthesia
A substance that provides loss of sensation with or without loss of consciousness.
Angora
The silky hair of the Angora goat or rabbit used to make yarn or fabric.
Angus
A breed of cattle originating in Scotland, having no horns and black or dark red coat.
animal
A multicellular organism of the kingdom Animalia, differing from plants in certain typical characteristics such as capacity for locomotion, nonphotosynthetic metabolism, pronounced response to stimuli, restricted growth, and fixed bodily structure.
animal husbandry
The care and breeding of domestic animals such as cattle, hogs, sheep and horses.
antennae
Flexible, jointed sensory appendages in the head of an insect, myriapod or crustacean.
apothecary
Pharmacy.
application
The form or document on which a request for assistance is made.
aquatic
Consisting of, relating to, or being in water.
aquaculture
Controlled cultivation and harvest of aquatic plants and animals; fish farming.
arable
Fit for cultivation, as by plowing.
Arachnida
Any of various arthropods having four pairs of legs (spiders, scorpions, mites, ticks).
archaeologist
Someone who looks for and studies material evidence from past human life and culture.
art
Human effort to imitate, supplement, alter, or counteract the work of nature.
Arthropod
Any of numerous invertebrate organisms, including insects, crustaceans, arachnids and myriapods, having a horny, segmented external covering and jointed limbs.
asset
Any item of value that is owned.
assimilate
To absorb a culturally distinct group into the prevailing culture.
atlas
A book or bound collection of maps.
atmosphere
The gaseous mass or envelope surrounding a celestial body, especially the one surrounding the earth, and retained by the celestial body's gravitational field.
aurochs
An extinct bovine mammal of northern Africa, Europe and western Asia, believed to be the forerunner of domestic cattle.
axis
A straight line about which a body or geometric object rotates or may be conceived to rotate.
axle grease
Lubricant used to prevent friction between the axle and wheel of a wagon.
